The performance and costs of native samae dam chickens (Gallus gallus) breeders of smallholder farmers in Thailand

Abstract

The results showed that production costs tended to decrease when male and female black macaque chickens were raised in the second cycle. The average fixed cost per total cost is approximately 16.48%, the average variable cost per total cost is 91.87%, and the total cash cost is 66.79%. The highest-priced item is chicken feed at 37.70% of the total cost. The feed cost per 1 kg of body weight gain averaged over two cycles; the male weight gain was 49.05 baht/kg. In females, 53.29 baht/kg. An analysis of income structure, economic profit, and average parent breeder production per total cost of smallholder farms revealed that parent breeder production can be profitable from the first round of production. The loss per production index is 20%, and the production efficiency index is 50–60%.
