Abstract

The "Three Leaders" initiative is a promising approach to creating lasting change in waste management by empowering local leaders to address the growing urban waste crisis. In 2022, Thailand generated an average of 70,411 tons of waste per day. Of this amount, an average of 24,109 tons per day (34.2%) was recycled, 26,849 tons per day (38.1%) was disposed of properly, and 19,452 tons per day (27.6%) was disposed of improperly. There was a waste backlog of 9.91 million tons, with most of it originating from households. Therefore, effective waste management starting from the community level can significantly reduce the amount of waste generated. The key factors for successful community-based waste management include: Raising awareness among community members about waste management issues. Developing leaders or role models who can demonstrate effective waste management practices. Ensuring continuity and sustainability by promoting the 3Rs principle (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) to foster understanding of waste management solutions at the source. Expanding community participation by encouraging community members to contribute ideas and participate in waste management activities.
