Economic Grass: Pangola Hay Production

Abstract

This article aims to transfer knowledge from the operations of Department of Livestock Development in developing high quality pangola hay as animal feed supplies for farmers to produce and sell. Pangola grass (Digitaria eriantha; synonym D. decumbens) is one of the highest quality tropical grasses and is extensively utilized as fresh grass, hay, and silage for ruminant animals. Currently, farmers across Thailand are interested in producing pangola grass for both fresh sales and hay making. This article presents a comprehensive production process of pangola hay, covering land preparation, transplanting method to reduce seed material, fertilization, harvesting, sun-drying, baling, and storage. Nutritive values, hay quality standards, and cost-benefit analysis of pangola hay production are also discussed. In conclusion, pangola grass is an economic grass that can generate stable income for farmers.
