Abstract

This study evaluated the decolorization performance of Hydrilla verticillata in water contaminated with methylene blue (MB) and malachite green (MG) at an initial dye concentration of 100 mg/L under continuous fluorescent illumination (24 h). MB exhibited a gradual decrease in absorbance, achieving 87% decolorization after 24 h and 93% after 96 h. MG was decolorized more rapidly, reaching 43% after 1 h and complete (100%) decolorization after 72 h. After 96 h, total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) increased significantly (p < 0.05), whereas dissolved oxygen (DO) decreased significantly (p < 0.05) in both treatments, while pH remained stable (6–7). FT-IR spectra of MB and MG before and after treatment showed similar characteristic absorption bands, with no detectable changes in the major peaks, indicating that no detectable structural changes occurred in the dye molecules during the experimental period.
